Who is Jerm?

I am Jeremy Goldman; designer, teacher, and photographer.
Raised in Colorado, I currently live in Toledo, Spain, where I teach English. During this time, I continue to practice my passions independently and pursue design opportunities as they arise.

I hold a degree in architecture, which followed two years of mechanical engineering school and a project-based STEM secondary education. These have been complemented by internships and coursework across historic preservation, landscape and interior architecture, urban planning, and universal design.

My areas of study are anchored and ultimately driven by a profound spiritual connection. A deep sense of interbeing informs a creative philosophy centered on inference and gestalt, holistic wellness, and environmental and social justice.

These two realms of mind and spirit are channeled, by iterative and daily practice, into a passionate, organized designer. Every day I am testing, discovering, and redefining my path within the world.

This website is a place to catalog, organize, and display my personal, professional, and academic work - and is itself a work in progress. I can also be found on any of the following platforms:

Education

Bachelor of Science in Architecture – University of Colorado Denver

Fall 2019-Spring 2022
Graduated from CU Denver’s College of Architecture and Planning undergraduate program. Before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, participated in rigorous design studios, while focusing other core courses on landscape architecture and interior design. As an individual and within highly diverse groups, produced work for critical review by academic and practicing professionals. Designed and fabricated the college’s first human-scale semi-permanent studio installation.

Through fundamental coursework, acquired a broad knowledge of contemporary construction practices and building sciences. Took a variety of technical elective classes, on topics from Revit to geometric numeroloy to parametric design.

CAP Dean’s List – Spring 2021.

Mechanical Engineering Studies – SUNY Stony Brook

Fall 2017-Spring 2019
Spent two years in the Mechanical Engineering Program in New York. Completed fundamental coursework including engineering statics/dynamics, linear algebra and vector-valued calculus, machining and electronics, and classical mechanical and electromagnetic physics. Elective studies included physical astronomy, film history, and music theory.

As president of Greeley Hall, I represented the interests of students living in my dorm building within the university-wide Residential Student Government. Internally, I coordinated the executive board to plan, organize, and requisition funding for events within the hall and across the quad.

As a member of Pocket Theatre Club and Mr. Feffer’s Improv Troupe, I performed rehearsed and improvised theater across campus and hosted social events.

Teaching Large Classes and 10-hr Telephone Teaching Courses.

Work Experience

Language Assistant – Toledo Secondary Schools

October 2023-Present | Toledo, Spain
I work as an Auxiliar de Conversacion in the bilingual Formación Profesional (Vocational Training) programs of three secondary schools across Toledo: IES El Greco, IES Azarquiel, and IES Universidad Laboral. The variety in campuses is complemented by a variety in classroom subjects: Microbiology, computer science, and marketing tourism, to name a few.

In each class, my role is twofold. During usually the first half of two-hour classes, I support teachers in the course of their lessons as a native speaker, in an environment that is otherwise all second-language English learners. I provide context for common and technical phrases and help with pronunciation and meaning. I act as a bridge, applying my skills in both English education and my always-growing abilities in the Spanish language to connect students to their content.

During the second hour, I lead the classroom with my own lessons. These lessons focus on many topics, all centered on English language and the culture of the English-speaking world, with the goal of getting the students to use the language as much as possible. We listen to music, watch clips from movies and television, and read news articles in skills-based lessons to practice comprehension and teach targeted language. Individually and in groups, I engage them in both controlled practice and free production activities and games to facilitate the students’ comfortable and spontaneous use of new forms and vocabulary.

Architectural Designer – D2C Architects

October 2022-August 2023 | Denver, Colorado, US
As a designer at D2C, I played a key role the pre-construction design process, and was deeply involved in every aspect, from conducting user interviews and site visits to delivering the final documents. My collaboration with job captains and project managers spanned a variety of projects, each with its unique demands and challenges.

My daily tasks were diverse, ranging from correcting redlines and specifying equipment to conducting research and developing site analyses. This variety kept me on my toes and ensured that every day brought something new. I simultaneously managed up to 6 projects, each at different scales and stages of delivery. This required careful planning and discussion with my coworkers to effectively manage time, resources, and information.

A significant part of my role involved coordinating between the internal design team, engineering consultants, and clients. I frequently prepared and presented content to stakeholders, ensuring everyone was on the same page.

In Revit (v. 2019-2023), I developed drawing sets tailored to the needs of various projects. My work focused exclusively on public projects, including Emergency Services response and training centers, vehicle fleet maintenance facilities, recreation and event centers, and even multi-family housing. I was lucky enough to work on these projects alongside architects who focused strongly on design-as-health. All this gave me a broad perspective on the unique demands and challenges of a variety of projects.

Student Assistant – CU Denver CLAS Dean’s Office

July 2019 2022-August 2022 | Denver, Colorado, US
As a Student Assistant in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office, I served two distinct roles.

In my first role, I was a general service resource for the students in the college. I assisted them with their queries and served as a campus resource, providing guidance and support to help them navigate their academic journey. In the course of this work, I worked individually with not only students but their families in resolving issues, finding information, and guiding them through the bureaucracy of the University system. I accomplished this well, and was, in the words of one parent, “...incredibly kind, patient, sympathetic, and most importantly helpful.”

In my second role, I served as an administrative assistant to the staff, faculty, and Deans of the college. I helped with general office work and contributed to longer-term projects, ensuring the smooth operation of the office. Day-to-day operations included management of the college’s inbox and general administrative tasks as required by the deans and support staff of the office. Longer term projects included recruitment efforts, document archival and digitalization, and even helping to plan the Denver Metro Science & Engineering Fair.

In response to the shift from in-person work to online-only due to COVID, I took the initiative to develop a number of Dean’s Office procedures. As part of a team, I created an office-wide email and video call help desk service, which was available to students, staff, and faculty alike.  Following the success of the help desk service, we collaborated with the college’s IT staff to create the CLAS IT Help Desk. This involved receiving, sending, and tracking the progress of technology-related issues. My role also involved documenting processes and trends, and using these insights to develop a framework for a future independent Help Desk.

I later took this auditing approach and applied it back to the front-desk resource role, creating a system to track and analyze queries by time, date, and type. This analysis ultimately led to a more efficient scheduling system for the front desk.

Easement Inspection Intern – Historic Denver

June 2022-August 2022 | Denver, Colorado, US
As an Easement Inspection Intern at Historic Denver, Inc., I planned and conducted visual façade inspections of over 70 buildings around Denver, each with a Historic Denver easement. My role involved training and coordinating a team of volunteers to assist in these inspections, ensuring a smooth and efficient process.

Before each inspection, I communicated with building owners and property managers, setting expectations and addressing any concerns. After each inspection, I compiled detailed reports, providing valuable insights into the condition of each building.

My approach to inspections was both detailed and holistic. I took thorough notes and detailed photographs, and reviewed previous inspection reports to gain a comprehensive understanding of each building’s condition. I considered both near- and long-term strategies for building maintenance, ensuring a sustainable approach to preserving Denver’s historic buildings.
