Squash!

A sum: disparate aspects.
Components of form arranged such that they assemble
a shape, shadow, division.
A whole, deconstructed.
Base sensations of texture, tone, temperature.

Explorations at all Scales

Acorn Squash (Cucurbita Pepo var. Turbinata). 1lb 5oz (600g). Purchased Jan 19, 2020

Set 1: Floral, Difuse
Set 2: Geometric, Continuous
Set 3: Shadowed, Boundaried

Pencil and charcoal on mid-weight paper
First, looking at a whole acorn squash through its aspects in origin, form, and projection. The squash was positioned in all different perspectives and angles of light, to look for the forms within the larger form. Patterns emerged quickly, and were sketched in real time.

Literal Deconstruction

The squash had to be cut open. This was done with great intention, creating a unique “stage” within the gourd while minimizing cuts and maintaining its integrity in a variety of environments.

The first through-cut is a horizontal viewport. Second is a vertical shaft, into which fits a quartz stone. One more, smaller, horizontal hole is cut just above the level of the viewport.

These section sketches show the simple, but highly unique volumes that arise from these simple cuts.
Now come the fun bit.

Changing Conditions
